Psalm 61- Where do I run when I need Help
“Faith like a muscle grows by stretching” A.W. Tozer
Always ask the question is God’s Word True? Does it ever lie? Your walk with God will be the result of your beliefs. The power of God will be released in your choices.
Jesus said, "I will always be with you, even to the end of the earth". (Matthew 28:20) True or false?
David is far from his home in Jerusalem.(Probably 2 Samuel 15-18) Maybe he is in Syria, as in Psalm 60. Or, maybe, he is in Edom after he had run away from his son Absalom, when Absalom tried to become king. Sometimes he was sad. This was because he did not think that he could do anything. This is what "my heart is weak" means in v2 He did not feel brave enough to fight, he just wanted to die. But he knew that this was wrong, so he asked God for help. He thought of things around him that made him think about God. To David, God was *like a special rock where he could hide. He was the cleft of the rock to which he would run and hide as God’s glory passed by.( When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.) Exodus 33:22 He knew God in His secret place. He knew if he ran to God and abide in Him that we would be safe in His care. Psa 91:1
Davids cry to God is no difference
David has a firm faith in God. He envisions in his mind how he experiences God.
• God is a rock, verse 2. The rock is a safe place where David can go when his enemies are fighting him. God is not a rock, but he is like a rock and David is running to the relationship He has with God. When David is with God, it is like being on a very high rock. His enemies cannot reach him.
• God is a tower, verse 3. Old towns often had walls round them. This kept the enemies out of the town. The walls had tall parts or towers and area of a strong defense. The soldiers could see their enemies from the towers, but the enemies could not reach the soldiers! Towers made the soldiers feel strong. God is not a real tower, but He gives them a place in Him to stand firm and be strong.
• God has a house, verse 4. When David was alive, many people had a tent, dwelling place, tabernacle. David understood that when someone asked you to come into their tent, it meant that they would keep you safe in it. David thought that God had a very big tent and that he would be safe in it. Because David says "for ever" he means that God’s tent is either in heaven or heaven itself., John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” Really, the Hebrew Bible says, "I want to live in your for ever house". It was the house, or tent, that would be for ever. David wanted to be in it for ever! Psalm 23:6 And I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever. He had not read in 2 Corinthians 5:1 “For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down--when we die and leave these bodies--we will have a home in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.” A forever home! Prepared by Jesus, Himself. John 14:1 “In My Fathers house are many mansions, I go to prepare a place for you that where I am there you may be also…”
• God has wings, v4. A bird has wings, it flies with them. Also, it keeps its baby birds under them, to make them warm and safe. God does not really have wings, but He paints a beautiful picture of what He does for His people is like what a mother bird does for its babies. God keeps His people safe. “How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn't let me.” Matt 23:37
In verse 5 David says that God has answered his prayer. He is assured in His Spirit that His God has heard his prayer. He knows that His inheritance is safe for those who belong to God. Those who trust Him and are called according to His name. The land is the Lord’s.
If Psalm 61 is about David fighting the Syrians, then the inheritance is the land that David got in the fight. If it is about Absalom wanting to be king, then the inheritance is the land of Israel that David got back when Absalom died. An inheritance is something that someone gives you. God gave David’s people the land that He had promised them. That is why we call it "The Promised Land".
Each of us are leaders- and this is my prayer for you.
Verses 6- 7 I am asking that God give you many healthy, safe years to lead in your area
· That you will lead under His protection
· That God’s unfailing love and faithfulness watch over you and your family
· That His love flow out of you to those He has given you to lead.
Wow, then in V8, I will sing praises to His name forever as daily I fulfill my vows to pray.
God’s blessing on you as you walk the walk holding the hand of our Creator and Lord.
The Master has all we need and He hands it out as He ask us to do His Will. The slave never has to come up with the supplies only present himself for service.
