Psalm 2
The Rebels of the World Unite
(No author listed here, but see Acts 4:25-26, it is attributed to David)
Psalm 2 is a contrast between the tumultuous disobedience of the ungodly world and the pure exaltation of the righteousness of God.
Psalm 1 - the wicked were driven like chaff
Psalm 2 - the wicked are broken into pieces like a potter's vessel
Psalm 2 - ends with a call to mankind: defy God and perish - or - surrender to Him and be blessed.
>There are 4 speakers: David 1-3, God the Father 4-6, God the Son 7-9, God the Holy Spirit 10-12.
vs. 1-3 God's guilty subjects
David speaks. He has been promised that his son and the Lord would rule Israel and all nations. His eyes deceive him. He asks God, "Why? Why is this happening? Is my faith in You and Your Word misguided?" (like John the Baptist) - a legitimate question. Who was David focusing on? What can I trust more than what I see? 2 Chronicles 20:12, 2 Kings 19:14-19
David questions - Why?
1) Why do the nations rage? There was a conspiracy, a global rebellion against God and His Anointed (united nation rebellion).
2) The world unites to get rid of God.
3) The people of the world speak with one voice - "We desire to be free of control by God."
vs. 1-3 - The human race is united in its rebellion against God's rule, a revolt that was climaxed at the first coming of Jesus Christ.
The heart of sin is discarding God's rule in favor of one's own will which says - "We will not have this man to reign over us. Luke 19:14 (KJV)
The yoke (teaching) of Christ is light to the Christians and is intolerable to the lost. Do we love that yoke? OR Do we wish to get out from under it?
vs. 4-6 God speaks. (Adonai)
He who sits in heaven laughs. God laughs at men and their attempts to overthrow Him. Man is mortal. God is eternal, uncreated, self-existent, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, infinite, infallible, holy, high, lifted up, and worshiped by countless angel throngs.
vs. 5 As God's laughter dies down, a rising tide of fearful wrath, holy wrath.
God hears - We decree the banishment of God together with His principles and His people from the face of the earth. God says, "Is that so?"
The Condemnation of the Earth
We now see:
a) strife & turmoil
b) suffering & pain, sorrow & grief
c) woes & atrocities
We do not see the world as God created it. We see:
a) pollution by man
b) air not fit to breathe
c) rivers & lakes with water not fit to drink
We see our physical earth cursed as a result of sin:
a) the ground
b) violent weather patterns
We can see God's intent for man by looking at Jesus. Man was created in the image of God, yielded to sin, and the image was marred. Jesus came to show us the image of God. "Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father" John 14:9. At Jesus' baptism God said, "This is My beloved Son."
vs. 5-6 God speaks. The Lord declares, "I have placed My chosen King on the throne."
This is His kingdom: Peace with God and man, peace with yourself peace with your fellow man and the animals.
In His kingdom: Righteousness shall cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. Everyone will be:
a) doing the right things
b) for the right motives
c) with no more fears
d) the earth will be restored
e) the desert will bloom like a rose
f) we will be restored into the image of God
g) eyes of the blind shall be opened
h) ears of the deaf will be unstopped
i) the lame will leap like a deer
j) tongues of the dumb will sing
Can you imagine the joy, the love , the excitement, and no more pain?
"Yet I have set My King upon My holy hill of Zion." (Jerusalem) This is past tense, it is already done.
vs. 7 Jesus speaks. He is THE Anointed. Heb. 1:5-6 and Acts 13:33-34 "I will do it." "Ask of Me and I will make the nations Your inheritance." John 5:22 Sonship & His sovereignty:
vs. 8 His sovereignty -- the culmination of His inheritance. The kingdom of the world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever." Rev. 11:15
vs. 9 He will rule with an iron scepter. Imagine a potter going through his creation with an iron rod, breaking and smashing everything found unworthy.
But God - an offer of mercy and grace.
The Holy Spirit speaks. Therefore, be wise. Be warned. The Holy Spirit is calling them to repentance. Come to Him. Embrace Him. Let Him bless you. Recognize His authority. Shift your allegiance from yourself to Christ. Take refuge in Him. The Choice ---- Broken or Blessed.
