Psalm 12 & 13

PSALMS 12 and 13

When you feel as Elijah did ... "I alone, am left." 1 Kings 19:10

As did David in this chapter - "The faithful have vanished from the earth."

"It should be our daily prayer that we may rise above our age." Spurgeon

You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 Timothy 3:1

Psalm 12

Verse 1

Caught up in the circumstances of the limited view of David's mind, David says:

· the godly are disappearing. the faithful have vanished from the earth. neighbors lie to each other. they aren't sincere, they flatter with words. are proud, conceited. are as gods, independent, and self-sufficient. ignore the laws of God. it is true, it is pure. it is refined 7 times over.

"When you look into David's psalms, you will somewhere or other see yourself. You never get into a corner but you find David in that corner. I think that I was never so low that I could not find that David was lower; and I never climbed so high that I could not find that David was up above me, ready to sing his songs upon his stringed instrument even as I could sing mine."

Charles H. Spurgeon A Treasury of David

Your problem is God's opportunity.

2 Figures of Speech:

Erotesis

Anaphora

Example - How long? How long? (repeated 4 times) David is very intense.

Lord, I'm trying to talk to You -- are You hearing me?

When we have really strong feelings/emotions, these feelings and emotions create their own reality!

This psalm was probably written before David was king and while he was running from Saul and his army.

Verse 1

He is tired, physically and spiritually.

·

·

·

He wonders:

·

·

·

·

·

·

· How long, how much longer can I go on like this?

- repetition of the same word at the beginning of successive sentences for emphasis.
- asking a question without waiting for or expecting an answer.
He doesn't have any answers. He feels ignored and frustrated. He is left to his thoughts.  Will it always be this way? Did I imagine God's calling on my life? Am I really to be the king of Israel? I didn't ask for this. What have I done wrong? Does God really care?

Theory of thermodynamics - the greater the heat, the greater the expansion.

In the spirit realm, David was becoming a spiritual giant.

David will not allow the circumstances, his view of reality, to cloud the truth of God's Word, God's character.

Don't be afraid. Behold your God. Isaiah 40:9

Verse 2

How long will I continue to seek counsel in my soul and sorrow everyday? (Pity Party)

·

·

It's self-torture - says Spurgeon.

Cause, curse, crime and cure.

Pity parties (self-counsel) keep your focus on your circumstances as you see them.

Cause - unbelief, sin, mourning

Cure - God's Word, reflection on His promises, walking with Jesus

Verse 3

Turn and answer me, O Lord (Jehovah, my Promise), my God (Elohim, my Power).

David is desperate. God sees his heart change - turning away from his selfish thoughts to God.

"If you abide in Me and My words in you, you will ask anything you desire and it shall be done to you." John 15:7

Consider and answer me, O Lord, my God; lighten my eyes… Psalm 13:3

Enlighten my eyes. Ephesians 1:17-19

Don't let me go to sleep spiritually. Ephesians 5:14

Don't let my enemies defeat me.

Don't let my actions feed their words.

Verse 5 I trust. I have trusted, not in who I am, but in Who You are.

·

·

·

I'm discouraged. I'm depressed. In Your mercy In Your unfailing love In the joy of my salvation

His faith

His joy

His thankfulness

Verse 6

I will sing.

Singing:

·

·

·

·

Because He has been so good to me -

God opened, enlightened David's eyes - from a place of wondering where God was, from despair, from sleepless nights --

To a place of rest, trust, reliance on His God, confidence in His God's plan and joy expressed in singing.

Circumstances are God's miracles that are not obvious.

When I'm so blind, I cannot see,

Enlighten my eyes, Lord -- make Jesus real to me!

“I will sing - because”
“I will rejoice.”
Expresses your joy. Increases your joy. Proclaims the truth. Drives away the enemy.
“I have trusted.”

·

Verse 2

·

·

Who can I trust?

2 Timothy 3:1 Perilous times shall come for iniquity shall abound.

David would say, "Amen. I am in the midst of these times." Elijah would join in.

Verse 3

They have proud tongues.

Verse 4

They say:

We can lie to our heart’s content.

We are the owners of our tongues.

There is no god who can stop us.

The people:

·

·

·

Verse 5

I have seen. I have heard.

I will rescue you from him who puffs at you.

" His ways prosper at all times. Your judgements are on high out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them." Psalm 10:5

Verse 6

That is a promise and

·

·

Verse 7

Okay, I got it. You promised to protect the oppressed -- your children.

It seems like the bad, evil are winning, but that is a lie. You are Truth.

We are the Salt and the Light.
