Psalm 45 - A Love Song-The King is Getting Married

Psalm 45    A Love Song - The King is Getting Married

A Maskil (a teaching psalm)

Jesus said, "At midnight somebody shouted, 'Look, the bridegroom is coming. Go out and meet him.'"     Matthew 25:6

C.S. Lewis wrote that some of the psalms meant two things .  Psalm 45 is a good example of this.

Before Jesus came - a king of Judah gets married.  The queen is the woman he married.  This could be Solomon or Hezekiah.

Spurgeon says that it's all about Jesus!

After Jesus came, or as a Messianic psalm.  Jesus, the King of Kings, is the Bridegroom and the Church is His Bride.

Either way, it is the King's wedding. Picture the Messiah coming.

V1             The psalmist says:

My heart overflows. (This is the moment I've been waiting for.)

It is stirred up, incited (bubbling up and overflowing).

You can't get the words out fast enough.  I'm, I'm, I'm like a skillful poet.

VV2-9      The psalmist says to the King!

V3             His matchless beauty -

VV3-9       Give Him praise.

VV10-12  The psalmist speaks to the Bride.

VV13-15  The Church/Bride is preparing to meet the King.

VV16-17  The Bridegroom/King/Jesus is told of His eternal fame.

VV1-9     The King in His beauty -

V1           The most handsome of all - no equal - the fairest

V2           Words of Grace, He loves us.  He died for us.  His choice.

He paid our dowry.  He gave His life and took His blood and offered it to the

Father.  You (Jesus) have been blessed by God Himself.    i.e. Hosea

V3           O mighty warrior - Mighty One - used only in reference to God -

                Genesis 49:24; Psalm 132:2,5; Isa 1:24; Isa 49:26, 60:16

                Christ is our Champion.

He is mighty to save, mighty in love.  Rev. 4:8

Rev. 19:11 Jesus will bring in the Millenial Age - a government of

                truth, humility, and justice.

V5           Your arrows are sharp - piercing the heart - exposing truth.

Psalm 2:9 "You will break them with an iron rod and smash them

                like clay pots."

So - in V5 The nations fall before You, lying beneath Your feet (a one Victor Army).

1

V6          Your Throne, O God  (Phil 2:5-6)

               1) Endures forever and forever without end!  Rev 1:6; 4:9-10; 22:5

Your royal power expressed in justice -

               2) You love right and hate wrong.  Jesus is not neutral.

Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You.  Isa 60:1-4

               3) Pouring on You the oil of joy -

This will be a happy government with Jesus as its ruler.

V6   Jesus is God - our Elohim.

V7   Jesus is in the form of man - God with us/Emmanuel.

V8   He (Jesus) has come to be married.  He has prepared Himself.

Your robes are perfumed with myrrh, aloes and cassia.

He is delightful to every sense -

·                    to the eyes - handsome, fairest

·                    to the ears - most gracious

·                    to the nose - most sweet

But they are burial spices, at a wedding made possible out of death.

The one Who was anointed is Prophet, Priest, and King.

·                    a Prophet - He spoke for God.

·                    a Priest - He offered Himself as the sacrifice.

·                    a King - He ruled the course of nature. Death could not hold Him.

V8  4) His reign/rule is beautiful - Ivory Palace adorned in ivory -

       5) Filled with music - entertained by harps

V9  Kings' daughters are your noble, honorable women.

Then at Your side stands the Queen/Church.

She is adorned in the finest gold from the seaport of Ophir.

At His right hand - place of honor, love and power -

The Bridegroom dresses her in the best of the best.

She is in a place of dignity.

(It doesn't matter her status before now; her past is wiped clean.  She

takes on the Name and all that Name represents.  She is His Bride.  He

gives her imparted (to give, to bestow) and imputed (to give her value -

all that He is or has) Righteousness.

The King is seen as fairer than any -

·                    Girded with a sword as a warrior

·                    Robed as a monarch

·                    Riding in victory

·                    He ascends His throne

·                    Ready to redeem His Bride

Who He is - is to be remembered -

those of the Bride forgotten.

2

She wears His Robe of Righteousness.

V10-15  The psalmist speaks to the Bride -

Listen, this is important.

Forget Your past, Your old nature.  Don't look back.

V11  Cling only to Your Husband - for He delights in Your beauty -

         Forsake all others.

Worship Him - a call to the Church - Worship Your Lord.

V12  As you honor Him - You will be showered with blessings from all

around. People of great wealth will show favor on You!

The Bride is married to the One Who sits on the throne.

         She has His ear.

The Church is married to the One Who sits on the throne.

We have His ear when we pray!

V13  The Bride has inner beauty (seen in even her secret chambers)

and she is dressed in outer beauty (the ark pitched within and

outside).  Her Bridegroom has spared no expense.  He honors

her - a gown woven in gold.

All those attending the wedding know that He loves her and how much.

She is the image of His love for her.

V14  She is led to Her King. (The church is led to our King by the Holy Spirit -

we are ushered into His Presence.)

V15  A time of joy - of great celebration - a day that has and will change Her

life completely.  She was bought; she entered and she abides in the

         presence of Her King.

The psalmist now speaks to the King - the promise of God to the King -

V16  Your sons will become Kings like their Father.

You will make them rulers over many lands.

V17  You will be honored in every generation.

Therefore the nations will praise You!

Hebrews 1:8-9  Forever and forever (in Hebrew it means as far as you

can see.)    Phil 2:10-11; Rev 19:1-10
