Psalm 39 - Tough Love

Psalm 39

Tough Love

“Where God loves, He affects in Love, and wherever God affects in Love there He will first or last teach such souls lessons as shall do them good to all eternity.”

This is a continuation of Psalm 38 –

David is remembering his sins and just the though of them is more than he can bear.  He loves God.  He has a heart for God and the pain is so much to bear.  He says in 38 – I need You.  (vs.15  I’m sorry. vs.22 Come quickly – Come cover me with Your Love.

This Psalm is read at a great percentage of funerals.  It is focal in Brahams Requem Movement 3.  It begins in a lament but Brahams is following David’s Word culminate it “My hope is in Thee.” Ps. 39:7 and then uses Song of Solomon 3:1 “But the righteous souls are in the hand of God, nor pain, nor grief shall nigh them come.”

Note:  The Protestant music is happy, hopeful- The Catholic (Verdis Music) is the Dum, Dum, Dum, Dum, the back side of death approaches.

Movement Four of Brahams is

How lovely is Thy dwelling place  Ps. 84:1-2, 4a

When you need to air out your thoughts, talk with your Lord.

Words to others build ravines that aren’t easily crossed,

they lead to sin –

they have to apologized for.

You never have to say Sorry for what you don’t say –

Peter opened his mouth to exchange feet.

Jesus said, “The tongue is set on fire by hell itself.”

Paul says, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable and right…Phil 4:8  and let the Peace of God (God of Peace) be with you.

Vs. 5-6

Remind me that in my greatest point of expertise, it is nothing, just a breath.  All I know is nothing compared with what there is to know.

What is life all about?

Vs. 7-11

David says, “My only Hope is You Lord”.

So please rescue me from myself.

I even look foolish to fools.

I am ready to be done with this

Please don’t punish me anymore

Your disapproval/discipline crushes me!

Vs. 12

Hear my prayer (Ps. 116:1-2) bend down and listen.  Here I am Lord, don’t ignore me.

I am a guest, a traveler through this world.  My home is with You.

Vs. 13

Spare me, lift the burden, let me smile again.  Continue to use, before I am no more.  AND GOD DID!  Matthew 6:19-21
