Psalm 33 - The Praise of Jehovah

Psalm 33

Psalm 33

1/13/10

The Praise of Jehovah

“The sovereignty of God is that golden scepter in His hand by which He will make all bow, either by His Word or by His Works, by His Mercies or by His judgments.”

We will praise Him because of His vv. 1-3

excellent character  vv. 4-5

We will praise Him because of His majesty in creation  vv. 6-7

We won’t need to fear – because He will accomplish His purpose  vv. 8-11

He causes us to be Blessed  v. 12

We celebrate His strength in opposition to the weakness of the flesh

  vv. 13-19

We worship          Him in fervent confidence  vv. 20-21

We bow our heads before Him in prayer  v. 22

Vs. 1  Joy is the Soul of Praise

Praise always has its reason and those reasons are found in God, Himself for:

a.      who He is

b.     what He has done

It is dangerous to rejoice in temporal comforts

What pitfalls are there to rejoice in

·        your health

·        your finances

·        where you are in life

·        yourself

·        sin (fatal)

Instead rejoice in God Who is Good and what He does do – and if you allow Him –He loves you.

God loves the praise of His people

·        Put on the garment of praise  Is. 61:3

·        He makes everything beautiful  Eccl. 3:11

·        Trust Him by praising Him in the midst of the storm  Is. 25:4

Praise is not beautiful from those who don’t know the New Song.  It’s the Song of the Redeemed.

Vv. 4-5  Why do we praise Him? – His unfailing love fills the earth!

·        His Word is Right

·        His ordinances are right—natural, moral, and spiritual

·        His incarnate Word – Jesus is righteous

·        God is good, just and excellent --  Luke 18:19, Deut. 32:4, Ps. 36:7

The Answer to Creation

vv. 6-7  God spoke

             Spirit flowed

             Word created

and -     the heavens were created,

             stars were born

             seas found boundaries

             oceans into reservoirs

vv. 8-11 Stand back and take note;

it is here He said it would be.

His plans are firm  --  Jer. 29:17

             His plans cannot be shaken

Nothing or No one can stop them.

vs. 12    There is reason to praise God because you are His.

vv. 13-19 We are under His eye.  He is actively looking.

             A horse cannot be trusted.

             Your possessions can’t be trusted.

Any fortress you build can be destroyed in a moment.

vv. 20-21  We wait on the Lord –

             quiet in expectation

             patient in hope

single in confidence – In God Alone.

He is our help, our shield, our hope.

He is All we need!

Why do we praise Him?

Vs. 22 – Our hope is in You –

The Psalmist prays, he appeals for mercy.

“According to your faith be it unto you-“  Mt. 9:29, 2 Cor. 10:15

He will never fail nor fall short.

A prayer for believers only – according to your faith.

1.     Only Believe – Mk. 9:23, Mt. 19:26
