Psalm 5 - Good Morning Lord - A Psalm of David

Psalm 5

Good Morning Lord -

A Psalm of David

(A picture of a God saturated life or perhaps a life abandoned to God - not yet perfect life but a heart for God.)

"Give me 100 men, I care not whether they be clergy or laity, who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I will shake this world for Christ." John Wesley.

vs. 1-3 > A personal prayer - My God

I pray

My groaning - meditation when words won't come - Romans 8:27

My cry - prevailing prayer - intense

My King

David was a King and he had all his needs met by others but he could not rely on them for his relationship with God. It had to be personal; One on One!

God, our Father, loves to hear our words. "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh." Luke 6:45

My King - David is a King yet he needs a King. The Centurion in the NT said to Jesus, "the centurion answered and said, "I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed." Mt. 8:8

David was understood:

Authority

Obedience Romans 12:1-2

God's plan and purpose (call on his life)

That he needed to seek God in the morning (not his advisers)

That he could expect an answer

When you get up in the morning, look to God with expectancy, He will not ignore you nor disappoint you. He knows about your day. The rising of the sun brings prayer - the setting of the sun brings praise -

It is morning. David has left Jerusalem with those under his command that were still loyal. The pain of knowing that his own son is chasing him, realizing that it is his own sin that has brought him to this point. He and his men have marched long and hard to get to the point where they can rest. They sleep for a night and David wakes rested and refreshed. Psalm 3 - They marched long and hard that day and now they come again to a resting place. David has thought of all the slanderous words that have been said against him and he talks to God about all this but before he sleeps he acknowledges God's goodness and His provision for him in Psalm 4.

It is now morning and David wakes up ready to talk with God.

G. Campbell Morgan wrote: "We face no day which is not filled with danger."

A day that I could blow my testimony

A day where I can misrepresent my relationship to Christ

Misrepresent who Christ is to His children

An opportunity to share His love with someone who needs Him desperately

David asked the King of Kings, the Creator of the Universe TO LISTEN!

Do we have the confidence in God, our Dad, to take His face in our hands and say - Dad, this is so important - would you listen to me? When you do and you look up into His face you will find that you are as David was, the Apple of His eye. The last time David was running from Saul, he was innocent of the sin with Bathsheba. He hadn't murdered Uriah. Our SIN haunts us but God forgives and forgets. David is pleading. Please listen! He comes to God with holy boldness, to his King, the One in authority over his life.

David uses the word that means to cup your ear so you don't miss what I'm sayng (give ear) and (hearken) as a dog perks up his ear to hear what man misses.

I will bring my requests to You, I have ordered them so I can present my plea. Gen. 22:9 - order is sames as is here - he lay the wood in order and bound Isaac

David ordered his prayer:

His situation

His heart was heavy

He was bold

He knew what he wanted from God

Listen to my prayer!

vs. 4-6 > David knows that God is Holy so he talks to God about the wicked/lawless man

God, You take no pleasure in wickedness/lawlessness

No evil will dwell in You

You hate the workers of iniquity

Absalom was:

Foolish, proud, arrogant, vain, empty, had no right to the throne

Handsome, had personal charm and charisma

A good talker and an able politician

But! He was trying to overthrow God's throne. He was getting into God's business. He has active unforgiven sin in his life, has murdered his brother, is chasing to kill his David and his King.

vs. 7 > David then say BUT AS FOR ME - he takes his eyes off of his pain and circumstances. (David) He is hurting as a Dad and as a King and as a child of God. But as for me - BECAUSE of who You are! Your mercy! Your unfailing love:

I can

Enter Your presence

Worsip in Your temple

So

Lead me Oh, Lord

Make my way straight

Talk to me clearly

Show me which way to turn

vs. 8-9 > Back to those pursuing him:

Their speech is false, filled with foulness and flattery. (David has probably heard that Absalom has raped his concubines) He says their throats are an open sepulcre - their hearts are corrupt.

David cries out, destroy them, but it is not a cry of revenge. We see that later when he has a chance to take revenge against Shimei who cursed him in front of his men, against Absalom, he pleads with Joab to deal gently with him. He only wants God's justice against those who are not obeying God's laws (way of life).

vs. 11 > A great contact

The joy of the redeemed! Those who trust in You!

Rejoice

Shout for joy because You defend them

Are joyful in You

Are blessed with Your righteousness

Have Your favor as a shield and buckler Ps. 91:4

David looked vulnerable to the world - so do we>

David's defenses looked week, do ours?

But David should! We didn't look at the circumstances, the pressures, the fear, the numbers, our own sufficiency>

He looked at God, his buckler/shield/alive and willing to be his provision.

A new day dawned. David took his stand He talked things over with God and then he was ready to sing praises to God, his chief musician.

What a way to start your day! Sing Praise!!!
