Psalm 58 & Psalm 59

Psalm 58  Enemies

“Character  is what you are in the the dark” D.L. Moody

“Silence gives consent. He who refrains from defending the right is himself an accomplice in the  wrong” Spurgeon

A Psalm written to the tune of “Do Not Destroy” written for the director of music

What we do in the dark will show up in our lives in the light.

This is David’s out cry against human injustice.

He outlines the actions- Wicked rulers

V1=5 “Justice do you rulers know the meaning of the word?

Do you judge the people fairly””

He accuses them of plotting injustice

Spreading violence

Lying

Spit venom

Refuse to listen

Ignore the things going on around them

David is talking about the sinful nature of man. Now, We don’t have to teach our children to lie. We did have to teach them to tell the truth.  Never, if you get in trouble just lie about it and get out of it." They just do that naturally. So we have to teach them you've got to tell the truth at all times. David said, "They went forth from the womb, speaking lies. They were estranged from the womb. As soon as they are born, speaking lies."

vv 6-8 David’s suggestion

Break their teeth

Smash their jaws

Break their hold on us

Dissolve them into slime

“Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour.”    1 Peter 5:8

vv9-10 The godly will rejoice when they see the injustice avenged

Everyone will say- Everyone will see

There truly is a reward for those who live for God,

God will be recognized as the one who judges justly here on earth.

Psalm 59   Deliverance is from God

For the choir director: By David, at the time Saul has sent soldiers to spy on David’s house in order to kill him. (David had done nothing wrong. It was Saul’s jealousy that caused him to chase after David) Sung to the tune of “Do Not Destroy”

Shall Jehovah put up with seeing His people oppressed?

v9 is the Key verse to help us when others are trying to trap us, plan to do evil against us and cause disunity.

David’s song of Victory-his faith and trust in his God!

You are my strength; I wait for You to rescue me, for You, O God are my fortress. In His unfailing love, my God will stand with me. He will let me down in triumph on all my enemies.”

God specializes in arriving on the spot, rescuing us from  difficult situations.

(Background scripture-1 Samuel 19:11)

We can trust God, say it like it is,  and stand strong in His promises. David lived by faith and confidence in God.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.

       Proverbs 18:10

1 Peter 5:7 “Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you.”

Vv 1-2  David cries out to God to be rescued.

Vv 3-4a  David sets the stage, the case against the wicked

He states he has done nothing wrong.

4b David cries out to God to wake up- I need help

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it. Hebrews 4:16

v 5 David knew God- O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel

David knew Him as Jehovah, Jehovah Sabaoth, Elohim , God of Israel, the Mighty

          God

Patterns from the past work in the present.

David through his life has always trusted God

            Always found time to pray

Always laid it all out before the Lord

Walked with God in an intimate relationship

Talked with him without holding back, telling it like he sees it.

vv6-7 A vivid picture of how David sees and hears that which is going on around

            him.

vv 8-10 David looks at the character of God and he takes a deep breath and starts

reciting who the God he serves is-my strength, my fortress, unfailing love

standing with me in Victory,

vv11-13 David tells God how he wants him to deal with the problem.

Don’t kill them right away, we need to see You punish them.

Just bring them to their knees-they deserve it

Let them fall into the trappings of their pride, curses and lies.

Destroy them and let the world see it, so they will know that You, my God

 reign in Israel.

vv 14 -16  The contrast that David sees between himself  and his enemy.

They prowl the streets like snarling dogs-  I sing about Your power

They scavenge for food     -I sing with joy  about Your unfailing love

They good to bed unsatisfied  -You are my refuge, my place of safety

-my comfort when I am distressed.

v 17 David’s confession, His song of Victory

            You are my Strength

            I will sing Your praises

You my God are my refuge

You my God show me unfailing love.

"For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

I Will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever
I will sing, I will sing.
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever,
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord.

With my mouth will I make known
Thy faithfulness, Thy faithfulness.
With my mouth will I make known
Thy faithfulness to all generations.....

Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day. Lamentations 3:23
