Psalm 63
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” Matt 5:6
Intimacy with God- David is in the desert of Judah and he is thirsty. Nothing will satisfy him except water. Not only is he thirsty physically, he is thirsty spiritual. John 7:37-38
But God removed him (Saul) from the kingship and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, 'David son of Jesse is a man after my own heart, for he will do everything I want him to.'* Acts 13:22
David shows us what closeness with the Lord looks like- David, whom the Bible calls a man after God’s own heart. David who said in Psalm 42: As the deer pants for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.
Psalm 63:1-8 gives a us a picture of a man who is missing dry and thirsty for that which only a fellowship/intimacy with God can satisfy. He uses words like, yearn, earnestly search, thirsts for you and I have no place to worship. I am spiritually in a dry desert. I want You my Lord. It is affecting my physical body, my flesh yearns for You. I ache for You!
V 2 –As we get to Him more deeply, we “see” the One who is unseen. David cries out to see God as he has before. He is homesick for that wonderful intimate relationship where he is able to see Him in his life and in his worship. The Sanctuary is where David runs to worship and he longs to be there again.
V3-4 This kind of relationship with God becomes the best thing in our lives and is better than everything else Nothing else can satisfy us or is more valuable than a close intimate walk with God . David lifts up his hands in total surrender to God
Vs 5-6 Loves captures you. Being in love with our savior generates the excitement, the anticipation of being in His presence. Hearing His voice satisfies us as nothing else can. This kind of love causes us to anticipate being with Him and know that He longs to spend time with us. It is a time of great expectation.
Vv 7-8 Trust and Dependence. Love trusts, it is patient, it is kind, the one loved is always worth waiting for. God’s love for us and our love for Him becomes our shelter in the midst of trial. We run home to Him and we crawl under His wings of protection and cling to Him in total dependence/desperation. You can love my husband, but you will not know the intimacy and the safety I feel when I am with him. I can tell you how it feels to know he is in my life and watching out for me in a way that I can completely trust him. But you will only observe it, and see it with your eyes and hear it with your ears. That isn’t intimacy.
Intimacy is first hand, He is my Shepherd. I will submit to Him. I know His heart and trust His goodness and wisdom. I have no cause for fear.
Relationships have to be pursued. To know God in an intimate way you have to pursue Him. You can’t live on other peoples love. You must clean up the soil. Nourish it with His Word. Ask Him to plant the seeds that you need to grow. Cultivate it. Don’t let the evil one plant seeds to harm His Word in you. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Listen to His voice. Trust Him to speak to you.
Getting to Know God
The first step in our quest for intimacy with the Lord is getting to know Him—who He is, what He does, how He thinks, and what He desires. Even though God is invisible and inaudible to our physical senses, a close relationship with Him is cultivated the same way human friendships are—through time spent together, communication, vulnerability, and shared interests. But most of all a desire to know Him and allow Him to know you.
( From the King and I)
It's a very ancient saying,
But a true and honest thought,
That if you become a teacher,
By your pupils you'll be taught.
As a teacher I've been learning --
You'll forgive me if I boast --
And I've now become an expert,
On the subject I like most.
Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you,
Getting to hope you like me.
Getting to know you,
Putting it my way,
But nicely,
You are precisely,
My cup of tea.
Getting to know you,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say
Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day by day.
As I ‘m Getting to know you,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say
Time Spent Together. We will never achieve closeness with the Lord unless we invest time and effort in getting to know Him. A neglected relationship simply won’t grow in richness or depth. Don’t let your schedule rob you of the wonderful treasure you have in Christ Jesus. That wonderful, deep, satisfying walk, love relationship with God.
Talk to each other. Communication is two ways. Talking to each other. God delights when you call His name, invite Him in for a talk. Psalm 27:8. He comes seeking that deeper relationship. How often do we walk away with out listening for what He has on His heart. All talk and no listening makes us boring and lacking in the relationship that we long to have. We tell Him who we are, what we need, and expect but don’t even bother to ask Him about Himself. God delights in hearing our prayers, but He also wants us to be still and listen to Him. Since He speaks to us primarily through His Word, that’s where we will most likely hear His voice. Pray as you read Scripture.
V6-Meditate on His words and ask Him questions: “What are You saying to me? How does this apply to my life?” Then be still and listen, giving Him time to speak to your spirit. Just remember that whatever He says will never contradict His written Word. The more you listen, the more you’ll hear His voice, and soon your time with Him will become your greatest joy and satisfaction.
V 8- Trust –is necessary in a relationship. I trust you to hold me secure physically, emotionally and Spiritually.
V9-10 Faith – in God’s unwavering protection from enemies and their plots against him
Statement of Faith- As for me…..
I will rejoice
I trust Him, therefore I will praise
V11-Confidence- that God’s word will be true even for those who don’t believe in Him. David leaves his enemies in the hands of God.
