"When Sin Collides with God's Holiness, Grace Trumps Sin"
Psalm 6"You can't tell it like it is if you don't believe it like it was." Vance Havner
David sees the need. He knows that things aren't the same with God and him. Who has moved?
No matter where we are life - or whatever is happening around us - there is a Psalm.
This is a Psalm for that dark time in your life when sin and the Holiness of God collide.
sorrow for our sin
sorrow when a loved one sins
sorrow when there is a sin against us
Focusing on the circumstances takes our focus off the solution and often we backslide.
have a pity party
get mad at God
don't understand what God is doing in our life or why
we've got to be angry at someone and often it is at God
David loved God but he has emotions he doesn't know what to do with.
Time this Psalm took place -
could have been when Saul was chasing him and he went to Goth and lived with the Philistines
could be the sin with Bathsheba
This is a penitential Psalm - a prayer of repenting. A great cry of anguish. There are 7 of them, Psalm 51 is one.
David realizes his sin and words just won't come. All he can do is weep. His conscience has him weak and broken. He needs a release from this pain and torment.
God has revealed David's sin and David sees his sin in the Light of a Holy God and it is more than he can take.
his spirit
his body
his mind
experience the discipline of God - no peace, no joy, no hope
Old Testament sin is not paid for by the blood of Jesus. It was covered by the sacrifice of an animal - the shedding of blood. It was forgiven in repentance (after a broken heart). David, a man after God's heart, has distanced himself from the fellowship of God in disobedience.
David, a man after God's heart, has distanced himself from the fellowship of God in disobedience.
I'm in trouble. I disobeyed and my Dad nows what I did.
David takes the initiative.
vs. 1 > Oh Lord, rebuke me not - I know I have it coming to me. Please calm down.
don't be angry
wait until you choose my deserved punishment
I am worn out from sobbing
m bed is wet with my tears
my pillow is wet (I'm not sleeping) all night (everynight).
I can't see
my eyes hurt
my grief has overcome me
my cying
my plea
my prayer

Can't You see how weak I am? I'm hurting; can't You see it? I need You to heal me; have mercy. How long? How much longer? (Aposiopesis - a sudden stop in speech) EMOTIONAL
My bones are waxed (shaken to the core of my being). Only sin can cause this much pain. How long, O Lord, how long? (Aposiopesis - a sudden silence) See Gen. 32:31-32. Perhaps interrupted by sobs. This is sin sickness; David had admitted that he deserves God's discipline. No escape, words are useless.vs. 4-5 > David's plea > come back - return, come rescue me. I know if You come back, I will be saved. I know You; I know Your unfailing love. Your mercy has delivered me before. I am weak, but You are strong. I can't praise You if I die. I want my relationship back with You. Don't let me die like this.
Mt. 11:28 Come unto Me, all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. David somehow gets through the activities of the day. He puts on a front that all is well. But his friends (I hope) and enemies start to notice his physical condition; his eyes are giving him away. God had heard
Watch out! Go away, all who do evil. David's temporary agony and his victory lead to permanent agony and defeat for his enemies. Avoiding talking to God about sin and its consequences keeps you from experiencing forgiveness.
Ps. 119:71 My suffering was good for me; for it taught me to pay attention to Your decrees.
Ps. 119:86-88 All Your commands are trustworthy. Protect me from those who hunt me down without cause. They almost finished me off, but I refused to abandon Your laws.
David was born in 1040 - 3,049 years ago - an God's Word is still the same. David feared that which never happened, the wrath of God. he received mercy and healing - as do we. God's wrath was poured out on Jesus. He took our stripes. Our debt was paid in full. Broken and spilled out for me -
