PSALM 16
A michtam - meditation or a prayer Psalms 57, 58, 59, 60
The Golden Psalm -- David's jewel
"Hope can see heaven through the thickest clouds." Thomas Brooks
My El -- the title of God
My Master (Adonai) -- the relationship with God
All I have is from You!
Psalm 16 is a messianic psalm; it is about Jesus. Acts 2:22-28
Verse 1 Keep me safe, O God,
for I have come to you for refuge.
I am walking your walk.
Keep me safe - Psalm 91:2 "This I declare of the Lord, He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God and I am trusting Him."
Verse 2 I said to the Lord, "You are my Master!
Every good thing I have comes from you."
My Lord, my Master
Jesus bows His knee to His Father; He is all about His Father's business. He is near to God. He acknowledges:
All
Call
Protection
Encouragement
Leaders
All of these are from You.
I choose to do it. Isaiah 43:25
Jesus and God are one, but Jesus willingly became flesh, and needed to run to the Father instead of walking in His own power. Jesus didn't function as God.
Jesus expresses on His own His trust in God. He acknowledges that all good comes from God and anything bad does not come from Him. God will use these things for good if we'll let Him. God has a better plan.
Verse 3 The godly people in the land are my true heroes!
I take pleasure in them!
2 kinds of people - the godly (V3) and the ungodly (V4)
the godly - Isaiah 8:11-13
my heroes
I take pleasure in them
all my promises are for them
Jesus isn't saying we are perfect, but is saying he delights in us, enjoys us by mercy and grace.
Verse 4 Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods.
I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood or even speak the names
of their gods.
the ungodly - those who chase after other gods; they run hard after other gods
"They that multiply gods multiply griefs to themselves; for whoever thinks one god too little, will find two, too many, and yet hundreds not enough." Matthew Henry
Moses - Aaron - Golden Calf - it was ground up and put in their water to drink.
They experienced the bitterness of their sin.
The ungodly would sacrifice animals and even their children and drink the blood.
"or even speak the names of their gods"
Don't allow its poison on your lips.
Don't allow words to corrupt you.
That which is on your lips can so easily slip down into your mouth and corrupt your heart.
Verse 5 Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing.
You guard all that is mine.
Lord, You alone
No desire to seek another
His cup was full and overflowing.
Even in pain, His heart was full.
Even in death, He cried, "My God, My God," never ever thinking of calling on the prince of the world.
He, God, the Father, was all He, God the Son, would ever need.
His cup of love, grace, mercy, salvation, eternal life - was bigger than His cup of sorrow and pain.
... are my inheritance - Hebrew cheleg, my portion, award from God
Verse 6 The land you have given me is a pleasant land.
what a wonderful inheritance!

Look at God and see what is yours when you die to yourself and inherit eternal life. Titus 3:7
Inheritance
If we walk in the flesh, we can't be walking in faith.
Verse 7 I will bless the Lord who guides me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I will:
bless
hear Him
Verse 8 I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
Walk
Stand
Verse 9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.
My body rests in safety.
My heart will be filled with joy.
My mouth will be filled with praise.
I rest (am not afraid) in safety.
The reason : It's You, Lord -
You are always with me.
Your promises are true.
You will not leave my soul among the dead, or let me rot in the grave.
You will show me the Way of Life. John 14:6
You will bring me into the joy of Your presence.
You will give me the pleasure of living with You forever. Eph 4:8-10
He came to set the captives free. Isaiah 61:1
Verse 10 For You will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.
Acts 13:34-38 For God had promised to raise him from the dead, not leaving him to rot in the grave....This is not a reference to David, for after David had done the will of God in his own generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors, and his body decayed. No, it was a reference to someone else -- someone whom God raised and whose body did not decay.
You will not allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.
Not a reference to David. Paul can probably see the place where David is buried.
No, this is Jesus -- in Him is forgiveness of sins.
Isaiah 11:2-5 And the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon Him.
Verse 11 You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.
He is your Guide -- You show me the way of life.
There is
a traveler - me
a Way - the Path
the end - Life
joy of Your presence
pleasure of living with You !
